It’s not often that people associate Malaysian cuisine as one that matches fittingly with wines but we were able to change that perception at our recent Plonk dinner event.
Held on Saturday October 17th 2015, Plonk attracted more than 40 foodies and oenophiles from all over Melbourne. The eight-course tasting menu took hungry guests through a journey of Penang’s vibrant street food culture, where classic dishes were given contemporary twists.
Orient East’s roast pork bao and taro roast duck with kumquat marmalade both proved to be robust matches for Piano Piano’s Tempranillo, a spicy red infused with floral notes. Tscharke’s famous ‘The Master’ Montepulciano was another well-received red, with its aromatic raspberry and cherry notes pairing well with Orient East’s braised beef appam coconut pancakes and lamb rib shao bing.
Likewise, guests went wild over Tait’s BallBuster, a bold Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet blend which was paired with the salted duck egg yolk chicken wing and beef cheek rendang. Finally, Tscharke’s ‘Eva’ Savagnin proved to be a versatile performer; the sweet and bubbly white was an apt partner to both Orient East’s famous black pepper soft shell crab bao and pandan panacotta with salted coconut jelly.
